Crank Media Review: Rewind

When you make as many films as Brian Solano did, you got a lot of footage.  Some gets used, much does not.  Rather that hide the B-roll away, why not release it as its own film?

We present, Rewind. Rewind professes to be never-before-seen footage, but it lies. Its both never-before-seen footage, and the greatest hits scraped out of other BS Productions titles.  Best of both worlds, and best of all, its on their Vimeo channel for free.

So what do you get?  Honestly, I don’t like doing it in reviews, but theres such diverse content only a list will do:

– Ethan Pringle decking off Iron Monkey
– 5 great climbs from The Life
– Matt Segal in the Fortress of Solitude warming up harder than I climb ever
– Highlights from The Australia Project
– Castle Hill fun
– Chris Sierzant sending 5.13s barefoot in the dirty south
– Dave Graham getting FAs in RMNP
– Brian Capps epic roadtrip
– Some potentially culturally insensitive but generally good natured So Ill crushing
– FAs and feel-good clips from Karma
– Jason Kehl doing Jason Kehl things in Joe’s Valley
– Trailer for the film Spray
– Mark Hobson taking a huge downgrade on the infamous Zion dyno

Not gonna lie, minute for minute, I was impressed. Its like a greatest hits album, so all the chaff is stripped away, and while some of the clips haven’t aged well, overall I can’t deny its more good than bad.  The music is bumping, the sends are classic, and the people are the kind I’d like to hang out with for the most part. Its rare to get such a short film that show cases so many people, places, and vibes, and it also offers quick windows into Brian’s larger body of work.  If you want to know if you’ll like films like The Life, Australia Project, Spray, Karma, or the Players before you buy, this is a great watch.

Verdict: Worth It.  Rewind wasn’t well received on DVD – copies used to be everywhere on the market, commanding a whopping $5 and still not flying off the shelves. It’s a shame, because while its cobbled together from pieces, its more Johnny Cash’s Cadillac and less Frankenstein’s Monster. Now that its free, you have no excuses.
