2020 was an odd year: we snuck in some climbing, we watched a lot of films, we posted more articles than we ever had, all mostly laughing at our own jokes. But it was also a year that brought into bright contrast that not everyone’s experiences in the world, or even climbing, are the same. 2020 was a year of introspection, and listening to new voices, and we realized something that’s been missing from our pages, and that’s a different point of view.
Truth is, the two of us that craft most the articles here are about as demographically similar as they come – I’ll spare you all the labels, but suffice to say we’re largely in the majority we’ve realized this space can be an echochamber of ideas, opinions, and in-jokes.
So it’s time for a change. Crank Climbing is opening its pages for Guest Writers.
Need a place to express your voice? Well, we’d love to have you, especially if you can bring a new perspective to our pages.
Compensation
There’s something else we know – we’re not a huge blog. We’re not wildly popular – if something we don’t crosspost to Reddit hits 100 views its a good day. TimeToClimb we are not. Writing is hard work, we know, and nobody should be asked to work for free. For that reason, we will offer compensation to anyone we publish here, and commit to offer something to all authors via their preferred combination of PayPal, Venmo, Crank T-Shirts, DVDs, etc. No bitcoin though, don’t know what that is.
Dreadblogger Roberts Status
The other thing we can offer, should you so desire it, is anonymity. Sometimes being anonymous can help people share unpopular, but important opinions. Or maybe you think you’re opinion will be discounted if people knew who you were. For these and any of the other many reasons to remain anonymous, we offer the mantel of Dreadblogger Roberts – a name many can wield to prevent things being traced back to a name. One other promise – Tylor and I will not use this pseudonym for ourselves.
Process
So, how do we do it? Follow the steps below:
- Come up with a rough idea:
- Potential Ideas:
- A counterpoint to a previous article
- A Jams My Cams that calls out issues in the community (serious or satire welcome)
- Trip report to somewhere bitchin’
- An appreciation piece for a mentor or lost friends
- Ideas we’re not interested in:
- Personal\Individual call-outs
- Anything that’s gonna get us sued
- Potential Ideas:
- Contact Us
- DM us on Facebook or Instagram
- DM Justin or Tylor directly if you know us personally
- Email us at [email protected]
- Explain your rough idea
- Agree on compensation
- Write your article
- Decide if you want to be anonymous or not
- Publish
Simple as that! Its important to us to reach out early if you want us to host your work, for 2 reasons. First, we’d hate for you to spend a ton of time working on a piece that we feel wouldn’t be in our interests to publish. Secondly, we never want to be accused of stealing someone’s idea for our own editorials.
