This installment of Inertia changed drastically from the first. We start out with some funky beats providing the soundtrack to Fred Rouhling quickly dispatching some gritstone test pieces, but then it slows way down. The pace of the film slows way down from the first with some long sequences for a 110-foot trad line and a 35-meter sport route. Both were iconic for being a first ascent and first female ascent of the grade respectively, but unless you are really into climbing, the film drags at a viewing party. Even some of the boulder lines run the risk of a general crowd losing interest. What we really see, though, with these impressive ascents, is the film’s namesake: Focus. We are treated to some similar antics from the first film such as bridge buildering, boulder-boarding, crashpad dragging, and The layout with name cards before each segment means that viewers know who is climbing what in a far better manner than trying to read while watching in the previous film. If you are anyone, then the first film made you want to leave the gym behind and roadtrip with your buddies or start climbing. If you are anyone, then Inertia 2 may be boring. If you are a climber, though, this film will make you want to train to climb harder. It is always a great motivator for when your project just won’t seem to let you send it.
