Crank Media Review: Inertia.

Originally released on VHS in 1999 and then remastered on DVD in 2003 with its counter-part (Inertia 2: Focus), this is a video that everyone should own.  When the magazine Urban Climber started in 2003, this was one of the prizes when you signed up for a two-year subscription and it was awesome.  Climbing films today focus so much on the climbers perspective and their internal struggle of sending a project, or documenting the discovery and development of the next generation lines.  However, that was not always the case.  In the late 90’s and early 2000’s, climbing films took their cues from the late 80’s/early 90’s skating films of people just getting out and shredding.  There’s even some skateboarding and snowboarding thrown in for good measure.  No mega-projects, no “feelings”, and very little in the way of picture and audio quality, not the digital artscapes of today.  It was simply about people, some famous, some not, and some yet-to-be, going out to have a good time on the rock and not taking themselves too seriously.  A loud and funky mix of punk rock, nu metal, ska, underground rap, and some sick early digital beats it was advertised as the “video that will to get you psyched to go crank” (where have I heard that word before?).  At 13 years old it still lives up to the hype.  We watch this every year, sometimes more than once, to get psyched on getting outside.  Truly, it was a different era.
